Romney’s Mormonism is a public issue again. Are evangelicals ready for this?

June 8, 2011

Time to get the blog going again. Romney’s Mormonism is once again hitting the news and it’s getting hard to ignore. Mormonism is going to be big in the news for the next year. Predictions:

  1. Lots of upcoming opportunities to publicly expose the ugly history and theology of Mormonism.
  2. Lots of infuriating spin upcoming from the LDS PR department.
  3. Lots of Mormon bitterness and resentment toward evangelicals after the dust settles (no matter who wins).
It’s not a win-win. It’s going to be ugly and we ought to pray not only for the election process, but also for Mormons not to further harden their hearts. Some questions worth asking:
  1. We we evangelicals behave ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel?
  2. Will our criticism of Mormonism be Biblical and thoughtful?
  3. Will evangelical leaders who value political co-belligerence keep their theological commitments?

More to come later. If you are new here, I suggest the feature video:

I just wanted to respond to the following comment: “Lots of Mormon bitterness and resentment toward evangelicals after the dust settles (no matter who wins).”

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the “Mormon” church), I can say that I personally do not and will not harbor any such resentment or bitterness toward evangelicals. I cherish my evangelical friends. During my missionary service in Ukraine, some of my most beloved acquaintances were members of evangelical churches.

I think that friendship and mutual understanding of those who are different from us represent some of the most important qualities that we can strive for as Christians. I support anything that strives to foster that kind of spirit among Americans and would hope that the discussions we take part in also exemplify that striving.

Christians believe the Bible as we have it is God’s truth. Mormon’s believe the Bible is not fully trustworthy because a 14 year old boy told them so. Christians believe Jesus is God’s only begatten son (John 3: 16) Mormons believe that God has many sons of his own. Christians believe that God always was. Mormons believe that God was like you and me. Christians believe that the is only one God. Mormons believe that there are many. I could go on. Before Mormonism even came around, Christians (Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant) always believed that rejection of thses basics constituded a cult, especiall with a leader who have special privileges. We are not picking on Mormons, but to hide their beliefs and just say what we want to hear reflects on the politician as well.

Some of the comments you posted are false. The LDS church believes that Jesus Christ is the only begotten son of God the Father. I just wanted to correct your information, as you are not LDS and don’t know our doctrine. If you want to know what the LDS Church doctrine is then research it through the LDS church as they are the only reliable source to obtain the truth as to what they believe. I wouldn’t buy diamonds from someone who is a mason, nor would I buy brick from someone who is a diamond expert, can you not see the logic.

Mitt Romney’s religion was founded on a man named Joseph Smith (who claimed to have been visited by God and Jesus). He also claimed man can become a God himself by the works he does in this mortal life. If we look back into Joseph Smith’s history (study who this Joseph was) you will become familiar on March 20th 1826 Joseph Smith was accused of lying to farmers about buried treasure in their fields. Joseph was known as the “GLASS LOOKER” where he put stones in his hat and covered his face so it was dark. Then these stones would start to glow and show him where gold and silver was buried. When digging deeper into the Mormon religion one can also see another quote Joseph Smith said: “Come on! ye prosecutors! ye false swearers! All hell, boil over! Ye burning mountains roll down your lava! For I will come out on the top at last! I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only MAN that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John Peter, nor JESUS ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him, but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet.” Christians believe JESUS is God Himself – Where Mitt Romney and Mormons believe JESUS is our brother. Mormons believe you are not saved until you do Mormon temple work – Christians believe your are saved by accepting Jesus into your heart as your Lord and Savior and you are saved by His GRACE, by Jesus dying for you on the cross. Mormons are not Christian – Their church should be called – The Church of Joseph Smith and Later-day Saints.

So close yet so far away from the truth. I have LDS friends who like to come over for Bible Study. They are becoming disenchanted with their religion and religous views because of the many fallacies being revealed through the reading and studying of the word of God. I would have to agree with the post above.” Mormons are not Christian. Their church should be called; The Church of Joseph Smith and the Later-Day Saints.” I could never leave the teachings of the KJV Bible and embrace a false doctrine that mimics Christianity up to a point. Then things get really strange when they start doing what Joseph Smith wrote down in his own version of the Bible. Lord help us if something like that was set over our nation.
